Night Care in Cambridge

Someone awake, or someone there. Either way, nobody in the house lies awake listening.

Nights are when most families reach breaking point. The calls out, the trips to the bathroom, the confusion at three in the morning, the constant half sleep of listening for movement. Overnight care puts a trained carer in the house so the night is covered properly and everyone else can rest.

What Overnight Care Means

Night care is support provided in the person's own home through the night, rather than a scheduled visit. It comes in two forms, and the difference matters because it changes both the cost and what the carer can do.

A waking night carer stays awake for the whole shift. They are available continuously for personal care, toileting, repositioning where assessed, drinks, reassurance and anything that comes up. A sleeping night carer sleeps in the home and gets up when they are needed, usually a couple of times a night.

When Families Ask About Night Care

  • Someone getting up several times a night and unsteady on their feet
  • A person living with dementia who becomes restless or disorientated after dark
  • A family carer who has not slept properly in months
  • Someone recently discharged from hospital who is not yet confident alone
  • A person needing continence support or repositioning overnight where assessed
  • Anyone who is fine in the day but frightened at night

Which One Do You Need?

The carer
Waking night: Awake throughout the shift
Sleeping night: Sleeps in the home, gets up when needed
Best for
Waking night: Frequent support, high needs, unsettled nights
Sleeping night: Occasional help, reassurance, safety cover
Typical calls
Waking night: Continuous availability
Sleeping night: Usually one to three times a night
What is needed
Waking night: Somewhere comfortable to sit
Sleeping night: A spare bedroom and bathroom access
Cost
Waking night: Higher, because the carer works the whole shift
Sleeping night: Lower, because the carer rests between calls

Not sure which fits? We will tell you honestly at the assessment. Recommending a waking night when a sleeping night would do is not something we do.

What a Night Carer Provides

  • Getting ready for bed

Help with evening personal care, changing for bed, medication prompting where assessed and permitted, and settling comfortably.

  • Through the night

Support to and from the bathroom, continence care, repositioning where assessed, drinks and help getting comfortable again.

  • Reassurance

Calm company for someone who wakes confused or anxious, without the panic of finding the house dark and empty.

  • Safety

A steady presence for someone unsteady on their feet, and a clear escalation route if something is wrong.

  • Morning handover

Help getting up and dressed where needed, and a written and verbal handover to the day carer or the family.

  • Peace of mind

An accurate account each morning of how the night actually went, including anything that has changed.

Why Families Choose Us for Night Care

  • Honest recommendations. If a sleeping night is enough, we will say so.

  • Familiar faces at night. A small regular team, because waking to a stranger helps nobody.

  • A clear escalation route. Written into the plan, so the carer never has to improvise at 3am.

  • A proper morning handover. You hear what happened, not a summary.

  • Carers from across Europe, Africa and Asia. We match on shared language and temperament where we can.

  • Joined up with daytime care. One local team covering both, with handovers between them.
