Live-in Care in Cambridge

A dedicated carer living in your home, so you can stay where your life is.

For many families, the moment arrives when short visits are no longer enough but a care home still feels wrong. Live in care is the middle ground. One trained carer moves into the home and supports the whole day, which means familiar rooms, familiar routines and your own bed.

What Is Live-in Care?

Live in care means a trained carer lives in the home with the person they support, on a rota agreed in advance. They are there through the day and overnight, providing help as it is needed rather than at fixed visit times.

It is not the same as 24 hour waking care. A live in carer sleeps at night and is available if needed. Where someone genuinely needs support throughout every night, we would discuss adding a waking night carer or a two carer arrangement.

Who Live-in Care Suits

  • Someone advised to consider a care home who wants to stay at home
  • A person whose needs have grown beyond several visits a day
  • Couples who want to stay together rather than move into residential care
  • Someone coming home from hospital who needs close support while they recover
  • A person living with dementia who is disorientated by unfamiliar places
  • Anyone with a much loved pet, garden or home they are not ready to leave

What a Live-in Carer Provides

  • Personal care and daily routine

Washing, bathing, dressing, grooming, continence support and help getting up and settling at night, at the pace the person sets.

  • Mobility and safety

Support with transfers, mobility aids, moving safely around the home and reducing falls risk, particularly at night.

  • Medication and health

Prompting or assisting with medication where assessed and permitted, monitoring wellbeing, and raising concerns with the GP, district nurse or family.

  • Meals and the household

Cooking meals the person actually likes, shopping, laundry, changing bedding and keeping the home clean and safe.

  • Life outside the house

Accompanying to appointments, the shops, the hairdresser or a walk, and helping keep friendships going.

  • Company and reassurance

Conversation, hobbies, games, and the reassurance of not being alone.

The Practical Side

  • What the carer needs

Their own furnished bedroom, storage space, bathroom access, wifi and food provision. This is a requirement, not a preference.

  • Breaks

Carers are entitled to a daily break of around two hours and to regular time off. We agree cover in advance, so there is never a gap.

  • Rotas

Carers work in placements of an agreed length, then hand over to a second regular carer. We keep the same small team wherever possible.

  • Handover

Every changeover includes a written and verbal handover covering routine, preferences and anything that has changed.
